John Hughes: Reach the Rock

Achariya challenged bloggers to dress in something inspired by a John Hughes film as a memorial to his career. Reach the Rock is one of the lesser known works of John Hughes. Robin is a small town “bad boy” who recently returned after the accidental drowning of his best friend. He goes crazy and trashes the town landing himself in jail. Throughout his night in jail he slips out off and on without being notices further trashing the town while dealing with his past. It is a slightly darker side of John Huges but it is mixed with enough funny scenes to give it a comedic balance. This is one of his best pieces of writing in his career.

How has everyone’s summer been going? Ours has been fan-f’ing-tastic. Brekke and I just returned from our nice, long vacation. I am completely broke so it is back to the grind.

On a tip from one of Brekke’s friends I checked out the television studios of Fabulous Fashion TV. There are regular gifts at the studio and special gifts that rotate from various designers. MADesigns is currently one of the featured designers with a collection of 4 hairstyles(3 for men) and 2 pairs of eyes. In the regular gift area, Satoria has a nice casual suit in summer colors for men. Solar Designer Eyewear has a pair of unisex glasses that is fully modifible with their HUD.

Deviant Kitties & SCD Photo Studio

Deviant Kitties was one of the stores that Brekke loved at the Hair Fair. She dragged me over there so she could do a treasure hunt. My feelings was any store with the word Kitty in its title was not for men. I found myself surprised. As with most new places I hit the freebie/discount area first and found a free male skin and unisex hairstyle. The skin is called Maskk and the hair, which came in 6 colors, Thirteen. The other male skins will run you L$75 and the hair will run L$200 or L$70 for the discounted styles. Other male items are piercings for L$90, shapes for L$750 and a full avatar of Zuko from Avatar for $L1000.

The pictures today use the new and completely free SCD Photo Studio from the bloggers over at Shopping Cart Disco. It comes with Windlight setting suggestions. Now all I need are some textures to give this thing more background than white. The photo studio is easy to use. Just place it down and you are good to go. I suggest investing in a background pack or uploading your own favorites.

Calico Ingamm Creations has free 4th of July hair. There are 2 ad displays one with Josh & Seth and the second with Evan. In the other textures these styles will run you L$200. There is also female hair gifts as well.

Damiani Fashion Design has a special 4th of July skin with American flag tattoos and a matching outfit for L$1. This special is for group members with the group membership at L$250. There are often gifts and specials so this group is well worth the cost. There is also a female set as well.

Bandana Day – July 3rd

On July 3rd, the Hair Fair is asking us to take a day without prim hair in recognition of those children they are raising money for. On this day we are to wear bandanas instead. All over the Hair Fair there are bandanas for sale with all the money going to Locks of Love. Brekke and I felt it was important to support a cause and prior to the Hair Fair we donated a set of bandanas. Each bandana costs L$50 and ours are located on the South East sim.

Hair Fair – Finds for Men

Brekke and I have been busy with our summer plans but we took some time to visit the Hair Fair. The Hair Fair opened on Saturday to much lag(take off your prims) caused by shoppers who feel the need to dress in their highest prim and ARC items to slow down all the sim to a crawl. The build loaded quickly so I think the lag was caused by the people and not the build. The layout is a simple chocolate road to follow so it is impossible to get lost and, unlike the 2009 Fashion Expo, the build has a clean look with no ugly sculpted roads.

When you arrive at the Hair Fair you can buy for L$0 a lag pack that has 4 chocolate skins(2 male, 2 female), a pair of pants, 2 shirts(1 male, 1 female), and whipped cream hair. Many of the booths have free and L$1 sample offereings and most of the full priced styles run from around L$100 to L$400. One of the purposes for this event is to raise money for Locks of Love. Each designer has at least 1 style that donates money to the charity.

Fabulously Free in SL

The people who run the blog Fabulously Free in SL have opened up a new headquarter on the Car Wash sim. There are so many items here that it is now another good starting place for men just getting their footing in SL. Many of my favorite designers have items here like Bryce, MADesigns, and Exile Gear. I read about a special male gift from PXL Creations on their blog.

The steps to get this gift are simple:
Go to their store.
Join their subscribe group.
Add the store to your picks.
Return in 24-48 hours.
Click the sign under the stairs for this gift.
Receive gift.
Offer ends the beginning of next week so if you are too slow you will miss out.

PXL Creation skins usually costs L$1600 – $L2000 so this is a great sample of their work. Other male items they have are shapes at $L800 and eyes at $L40.

2009 Fashion Expo – Bring Your Ladies

I have to say that I was very disappointed in the 2009 Fashion Expo. This expo is to benefit the Relay for Life but there was a problem for me – not much for the men. I have no problem donating to charities but the male fashion world was sadly represented. I would rather buy a quality item for RFL than some t-shirt with a slogan. Brekke on the other hand found many items she loved so be sure to bring your ladies.

Three booths stood out for me: STELLAR, MADesigns, and Bleeding. Ink. Tattoo.

We already know that I am a MADesigns customer but the other two stores I am going to give more attention to when I am our shopping next. STELLAR had equal items for men and women with a variety of shirts and jeans. Bleeding. Ink. Tattoo. has black ink tattoos in many styles and designs.

In short, guys, if you are looking to donate to Relay for Life it might be better to donate to one of the kiosks directly because the offerings for us is limited. Or have your lady donate for you because she will have a variety of items to choose from.
